Something really awesome about photography is that it challenges us to get creative. Getting an idea onto paper and then trying to execute it can really fire up your creative imagination.
I used to do some stock photography and trying to get into the rankings can be a challenge. One of the best ways is to create interesting concepts. I got really busy with anything photography when I first started out, from macro to landscapes to lifestyle, corporate, weddings, events etc. I tried using every opportunity that came along, being a guest or the main photographer at an event, I always practised and experimented with things from a different point of view. Of course you need to really respect paid photographers and stay out of their way if you are not the main photographer at an event. You might not be successful with every new idea you have but it pays off in the long run as your ideas and execution gets better.
So I thought I’ll quickly share a set-up I did many moons ago with some toy soldiers.
The set-up costed almost nothing and something like this can be done quite easily. A sparkler was used to create the explosion effect underneath the Jeep. I got them from a local restaurant that uses it for birthdays. The flying Jeep and drum are suspended in the air with wires, from a coat hanger, that were stuck into the ground. The toys were purchased from a $2 store, I guess you can have a whole army scene if you want. The smoke behind the Jeep was created by a newspaper ball. The scene was photographed in the shade, close to sunset, so the ambient light was just used as fill light. The flash was mounted to the right of the scene, its firepower adjusted accordingly and voila!
I hope this tutorial fire up some creative ideas!
